Title: The Last Boy and Girl in the World
Author: Siobhan Vivian
Kindle, 320 pages
Published: April 26th 2016
Publisher: Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers
Genre: YA - Contemporary, Romance

From the critically acclaimed author of The List comes a stunning new novel about a girl who must say goodbye to everything she knows after a storm wreaks havoc on her hometown.

What if your town was sliding underwater and everyone was ordered to pack up and leave? How would you and your friends spend your last days together?

While the adults plan for the future, box up their possessions, and find new places to live, Keeley Hewitt and her friends decide to go out with a bang. There are parties in abandoned houses. Canoe races down Main Street. The goal is to make the most of every minute they still have together.

And for Keeley, that means taking one last shot at the boy she’s loved forever.

There’s a weird sort of bravery that comes from knowing there’s nothing left to lose. You might do things you normally wouldn’t. Or say things you shouldn’t. The reward almost always outweighs the risk.

Almost.

It’s the end of Aberdeen, but the beginning of Keeley’s first love story. It just might not turn out the way she thought. Because it’s not always clear what’s worth fighting for and what you should let become a memory.

I received an eARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review through Edelweiss.

The Last Boy and Girl in the World was a very confusing read for me, not because of the story itself, but because of how I feel towards the book. I'm so conflicted because when I started reading this, it didn't seem like my type of read, And then, after a few chapters, things got better, and I was more interested in reading it, and then it drifted off again. Mostly, the book felt boring to me, but these little moments that were very much amazing to me would pop out all of a sudden and my feelings about the book would get out of whack again.

The Last Boy and Girl in the World is narrated by Keeley, but the story is more than hers. It's about the small town of Aberdeen, which has become an environmental hazard and has required everyone to leave the town. However, Keeley's father refused to leave their hometown, and from there, the story develops.

The Last Boy and Girl in the World has elements of family, friendship and romance. But more than that, I love how this book showed me that there are times for having fun and trying to make the best out of situations, but there are also times when you just have to accept that things are bad and let yourself feel bad about it. I also loved how it showed that things don't work out in some aspects, but work perfectly in others.

I learned a lot of things from this book, and it was a heavy, emotional read for me just because I could relate so much to the main character. Keeley sometimes tries to get others to have some fun, but gets in trouble for it. And sometimes she just tries to make things better, but actually manages to ruin everything. And that's another thing I love about this book - how full of flaws the main character is, because that's what makes her real. She made a lot of mistakes, and the book wasn't full of lessons in the form of direct words. I loved how the book showed those lessons instead of just told.

Overall, I liked a lot of little things and moments from this book, but I didn't like it as a whole. It was so hard for me to decide which rating to pick, but I finally settled on picking something in the middle. This book is not bad at all, I just can't say that it was good. However, it's also the type of book that I didn't like, but wish so hard that others would actually be able to appreciate. That doesn't make sense at all, but that's just how I feel.

I liked it. Would maybe recommend.

For eighteen year old Gia Winters, having a movie star for a father, a former Playboy bunny as a mother, a Hollywood mansion, and a closet stocked with Chanel is simply another day in the life.

But her world is turned upside down when her father mysteriously hires a group of bodyguards to trail the family 24/7 and threatening phone calls from a "Dr. D" start buzzing daily.

When Gia scores the coveted role of Miss Golden Globe, she is forced to strike a deal with her bodyguard, Jack, who is almost as arrogant as he is attractive. Juggling Gia's romantic failures, fashion faux pas, and celebrity obsessions, the duo investigate a series of clues with the help of a police cadet, who has a special set of skills and an even better set of dimples.

But with the Golden Globes just around the corner, danger levels rise higher than her stilettos as Gia learns that the biggest secrets might be the ones buried in her own home.

In a place where the hills have eyes, high school nemeses, bad hair days, raging parties, and stolen kisses, there can only be trouble for a girl who was just starting to consider herself lucky.
Purchase at: Amazon / B&N / Book Depository / Kobo

Gia Winters is living the dream. She's rich, popular, lives in Hollywood with her movie star Father, and has a wardrobe to die for. When out of the blue, her Father hires bodyguards for him, Gia and her younger brother, Mike. Gia is left questioning why. Tall, dark and handsome, Jack is tasked with guarding Gia. She suddenly receives a phone call from a blocked number; a man who calls himself Dr. D, who is leaving her mean threats, ones she can't ignore. When the calls become more frequent, she decides to get to the bottom of this with the help of Jack. They need to find answers quick about who this mysterious man is and why she is being staked.
When the clues they uncover become too much for Gia and Jack to handle on their own, the police now must help find Dr. D before it's too late.

Firstly, let's talk about Gia. Shall we?
I'm just going to say it, I REALLY couldn't stand her. She whined way to much. She was always over dramatic about EVERYTHING! She couldn't make up mind about who she liked, or loved (insta-love, surprise, surprise!) About midway though I just wanted to strangle her with the straps on her stilettos. The only good things I liked about her was her sense of humor, her strong will to find out the truth, and how at the end of the book she seems to chill out and act normal.  Even though I didn't really like her the story itself made up for her character flaws. I really wished she would have ended up for a different character than she did but oh well.

I really loved her bodyguard Jack. He was so down to earth, devoted, funny and fiercely protective of Gia. Jack and Gia's friendship was funny to read. They always were bickering, teasing each other, and of course flirting. Jack ended up being my favorite character in the book and I think it would be awesome to read the story from his POV.

There were a lot of secondary characters throughout the book and surprisingly all of them I really enjoyed. Besides the characters, the storyline was really amazing. I loved the slow build of mystery and all the thrills along the way. There were a couple times I thought I knew who the Dr. D was but come to find out the author was just throwing in a red herring. The conclusion when the reader finally finds out who has been behind everything was so intense. I was on the end of my seat, reading faster to find out how it all comes to an end.
Without a doubt, Lucky Me was a fun and thrilling ride from start to finish. While I had my pet peeves throughout, I definitely recommend reading it.

I liked it a lot. Would recommend.

Book Review: The Stepsister's Tale by Tracy Barrett

What really happened after the clock struck midnight?

Jane Montjoy is tired of being a lady. She's tired of pretending to live up to the standards of her mother's noble family-especially now that the family's wealth is gone and their stately mansion has fallen to ruin. It's hard enough that she must tend to the animals and find a way to feed her mother and her little sister each day. Jane's burden only gets worse after her mother returns from a trip to town with a new stepfather and stepsister in tow. Despite the family's struggle to prepare for the long winter ahead, Jane's stepfather remains determined to give his beautiful but spoiled child her every desire.

When her stepfather suddenly dies, leaving nothing but debts and a bereaved daughter behind, it seems to Jane that her family is destined for eternal unhappiness. But a mysterious boy from the woods and an invitation to a royal ball are certain to change her fate...

From the handsome prince to the evil stepsister, nothing is quite as it seems in Tracy Barrett's stunning retelling of the classic Cinderella tale.

I received an eARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review through Netgalley.

When I first started reading The Stepsister's Tale, I was actually very invested in the story. As a fan of fairy tale retellings, it's always interesting to be able to read from the villain's perspective. But as I read on, I found the book to be too long because it was full or narratives, which I never seem to enjoy. In addition to that, I actually read Snow, Glass, Apples by Neil Gaiman, which is a Snow White retelling from the Evil Queen's perspective.

The main difference of that book and this one is in Snow, Glass, Apples, it showed the misrepresentation of the story, but it also showed that the events were still true. The Evil Queen really tried to poison Snow White, but she had her reasons. In The Stepsister's Tale, the author made it so that the stepsisters were absolutely kind, and everything was Cinderella's fault. In this sense, there was a role reversal. I think I would have liked it more if the characters weren't made to be so absolutely good or so absolutely bad.

I would have to admit though, that Tracy Bennett's imagining of the novel is very much commendable. It seems like a simple enough plot, but if I were tasked to think of something like this, I'm pretty sure that I won't be able to do it. The idea is really great, and I always enjoy reading from another perspective, but I think it could still be improved.

I liked it. Would maybe recommend
