Red is not afraid of the big bad wolf. She’s not afraid of anything . . . except magic. But when Red’s granny falls ill, it seems that only magic can save her, and fearless Red is forced to confront her one weakness. With the help of a blond, porridge-sampling nuisance called Goldie, Red goes on a quest to cure Granny. Her journey takes her through dwarves’ caverns to a haunted well and a beast’s castle. All the while, Red and Goldie are followed by a wolf and a huntsman—two mortal enemies who seek the girls’ help to defeat each other. And one of them just might have the magical solution Red is looking for. . . .Liesl Shurtliff weaves a spellbinding tale, shining the spotlight on a beloved character from her award-winning debut, Rump.
We all know the tale of little red riding hood. Red goes off to Grandma's house in the woods and falls prey to the big bad wolf. In THIS story, Red tells us what really went down.
While Red's parents are away she stays with her Grandma. Red's Grandma loves to teach her magic even if every time Red tries something bad ends up happening. Red has decided to give up learning magic altogether. Until one day Grandma falls ill and Red must go out into the woods to collect ingredients for an all-cure potion. While collecting her items, she comes across a girl with golden curly locks, Goldie. Goldie joins Red in hopes to help out and along the way she discovers there may be a way to not only cure her Grandma but make it so she lives forever. Red is told there are 3 items within the woods that can create immortality but what one will work? On Red's journey to find these magical items she is faced with many challenges, new friends, and foes but more so she comes to find a strength in herself she never knew existed.
Will Red find a way to save her Grannie? Or will finding the magic items be the least of her worries? Something evil is lurking nearby...and this time, it's NOT the wolf.
Wow! Talk about your fantasy books! Red was everything you'd expect from a fantasy story and more. The world building was simply amazing! There was so much always going on, a twist here, a turn there. The secondary characters, such a Goldie, Wolf, and Beast were all brilliantly captured and written into the story. The story held my attention and did not let go. I was totally lost in Red's world and excited to find out what would happen next. One of the main things I loved about the book was how different this retelling of red riding hood it is. I never expected the author to take the story in places she did. Author Liesl Shurtliff took the simple classic story of a girl visiting her Grandma and finding the wolf and remarkably warped it into something so much more! I will definitely be checking out all of the other books in the series.
Without a doubt, Red: The True Story of Red Riding Hood by Liesl Shurtliff is one of my favorite read of 2016 so far! For a middle-grade novel, it really is quite amazing! I so recommend it to everyone! If you enjoy books with a ton of adventure, magic, epic world-building, and fun and likable characters then this book is a MUST-READ!
4.5 STARS - Totally Awesome! I loved it, would read again.

Liesl Shurtliff was born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah, with the mountains for her playground. Just like Rump, Liesl was shy about her name, growing up. Not only did it rhyme with weasel, she could never find it on any of those personalized key chains in gift shops. But over the years she’s grown to love having an unusual name—and today she wouldn’t change it for the world!
Before she became a writer, Liesl graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in music, dance, and theater. She now lives in Chicago with her husband and three young children, where she still dreams of the mountains. Rump is her first novel.
